Jones Hall
Twenty years ago, when Killer Mike was first hitting the scene as a member of Atlanta’s Dungeon Family – home to ground breaking artists like Outkast and The Goodie Mob – the idea of a collaborative rap group consisting of an avant-garde New Yorker and a down south gangster rapper seemed virtually impossible. But just over ten years ago Killer Mike teamed up with the legendary Brooklyn MC/Producer El-P and did just that to create Run The Jewels. This revolutionary duo has since smashed down doors and laid the foundation for many hip hop artists to break the rules and progress the culture.
A fire brand lyricist who has never been afraid to speak his mind and address topics that many others won’t, Killer Mike never fit the role of the pop star and always seemed to be relegated to the underground, but in 2023 he released his seminal long player, MICHAEL, to critical praise he hadn’t really seen previously in his long and storied career. That album netted the artist three Grammys and catapulted him to levels that maybe even he didn’t think would be possible.
This Thursday night at Jones Hall, Killer Mike knocks down another door. A huge one. He has been all over the world with his Mighty Midnight Revival tour, but for this show he is teaming up with the Houston Symphony and Conductor Steven Reineke to present songs from his Grammy Award Winning album and more as you have never heard them before.
Consider yourselves lucky, Houston, this type of event doesn’t happen every day and you get to witness it first hand in your own back yard.
7:30 pm, Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana Street.
(After the show be sure to head over to Off The Record – 416 Main – to catch a special set by Killer Mikes DJ, Trackstar. 10 pm – 2am)
