Ahh its that time of year again to ponder the ever so effervescent question, “Should I upgrade my iPhone?” Thinking about it just makes me ecstatic to know about all the new improvements they have made since producing my current iPhone 13 Pro Max.
This past Tuesday (Sept 12, 2023) Apple broadcasted it’s Wonderlust event introducing the world to its latest and greatest additions to the Apple line up, included was the much anticipated iPhone 15. A refresh on its traditional design with new colors, new material, softer rounded edges to save that pinky and a plethora of additional of internal features.
iPhone 15 USB-C
The biggest change to its design is that it no longer supports the traditional apple Lighting connection, instead it now sports a USB-C connection. Current Android users may be familiar with this as it is the same one Manufactures like Google and Samsung have been using for close to the past 7 years. But of course when apple does it the do it right! Actually the government made them do it, so there is that. However to as an iPhone user I can appreciate this as most of my devices are already using the usb type c connections so having a cable around to get a charge will be a BREEZE! This does go without saying that these USB-C ports are not like your everyday USB-C ports so your current fast charger may not work well with the base iPhone 15 models so keep that in mind. The Pro and Pro Max will support it however.
As a photographer myself, I am always interested to see what additions they have added to the camera system and they have not let me down. 48 megapixels on the the main lens is a phenomenal upgrade from the 12 megapixels on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The new A17 chip processes the colors better than previous models. Better quality photos and video is always a plus to me. EVEN IN THE BASE MODELS you get the 48 megapixel camera! So if you intend on printing your images large and hanging them on your wall you will have a great camera that is capable of that without sacrificing quality regardless of what model you are getting. Also this will greatly help with the video quality for creators whom use their iPhones to capture professional content for their projects. The Pro Max will include a telephoto lens with up to 25x digital zoom. Now going in that close to objects will distort the quality of the photo. This is my only gripe about it. Samsung has been producing their devices with close to 100x zoom and still manage to get a decent photo from it. Come on Apple, INNOVATE. Be the pioneers you have been known to be when revolutionizing the computer industry and todays smartphone industry. As my friend Cecilia would say, le sigh….
Another one of the big changes to the design is the replacment of the long time Mute Switch to the now Action Button. you can program this button to an array of custom actions to Silencing your device in or opening a program, answering the phone etc… A welcomed new function to help make your phone assist you more.
Those of you that are fans of the gold models, I’m sorry to tell you they are not in the iPhone 15 pro line up. Apple now offers a blue and titanium grey variant in addition to the black and white models. It has been a while since I have gotten a black iPhone so I think thats going to be the one I pick up. The grey one does look good too. It would definitely match your Apple Watch Ultra.
I know I am upgrading this year for sure. The camera system alone is enough for me. The real question is are you? Are these features enough for you to consider going to Apple and upgrading your current device?
