With over 600 black owned restaurants and food trucks, Houston's black food scene is on fire! Lots of great restaurants everywhere you look. From Creole food to desserts to BBQ to upscale bars and lounges, the city has it going on.
There’s something for everyone, no matter what their age or background. Black restaurants are all over Houston, with more on the way! You can either start your journey or continue it with the restaurants below.
Grooves of Houston
Known as Houston’s best black happy hour spot, the bar has a bustling brunch. On Saturdays and certain Sundays, one can be satisfied here. The brunch menu is filled with a lot of brunch favorites like shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, and breakfast plates. The French toast casserole is my favorite menu item, especially when it’s paired with pork bacon and a piece of catfish; the casserole is so sweet and savory with a splash of tartness from the drizzled raspberries. Also, I always add a glass of blueberry mimosa for a lil razzle dazzle.

3D’s Krazy Kitchen
With two locations in Greater Houston, 3D’s Krazy Kitchen is the area’s zydeco headquarters! You can enjoy doing zydeco dances with local Catholic Church members and neighbors. Not only is this place a damn good time, the food is just as excellent. The menu is filled with southern favorites, such as fried ribs, crawfish, and oxtails. For me, I love the fried chicken, which is fried and seasoned to perfection. The chicken reminds me of a good home cooked meal, especially when paired with fried okra. Oh yes, pair the fried chicken with a Strawberry Hennessy drink for a complete experience.

The Gripper Kitchen
Hailing from Detroit, this place is known for its grippers or sandwiches, especially “The Grandaddy”; this is a grilled salmon sandwich basted with honey chipotle sauce, pepper jack cheese, spicy coleslaw, and sweet lou sauce on a toasted buttered brioche bun. However, I love the chicken pita! Because I’m a fan of Mediterranean food, the chicken pita hits differently; it includes bacon bits, which pair well with the flavorful grilled chicken. Also, Chef Tony, the owner, will welcome you with a vibrant greeting, which is always the icing on the cake.

Taste Budzzz Food Truck
Man, their food is off the chain, and I don’t say that a lot about catfish in the city. They have a burger combo, a shrimp combo, and a wings combo. Also, you can get free beer on the weekends. I really like this spot because it has a down home southern feel. The food is cooked with love, which is missing from several restaurants and food trucks here. I want to share with y’all my favorite menu items, which include catfish and spaghetti, the catfish, any meal with fried okra, the shrimp salad, and the hot lemon pepper wings. I put my name on this place!

Cleo Lounge Tapas and Fine Music
This place aims to provide a unique and classy experience by serving flavorful tapas and signature cocktails. Sometimes, they have live performances by a saxophonist. Furthermore, the menu includes burger and chicken sliders, lamb chops, fish tacos, and more. I really love the wonton nachos, which includes tuna and jalapeños atop a homemade nacho; it’s like a party in your mouth with the heat from the jalapeños and with the tuna flavor. Also, their drinks are top of the line. I truly love having a refreshing yet daring Strawberry Long Island with my nachos. What a combo!
